Friday Bangers! (Breakdown, Porter Robinson, Benny Benassi)

5 Nov

Breakdown is a duo of brothers represent lovely Los Angeles. They are relatively new to the electronic scene and are definitely making a name for themselves with some new releases! As for the video, I wish I could have witnessed the astronauts and robot walking down Hollywood Boulevard haha. Here’s the song to the video!

Breakdown- Pet Monster (Original Mix)***

I have two more bangers for you all! The first is a new one from the up and coming Porter Robinson that you might remember from a post a couple of weeks back. The second is a brand new remix from the great Benny Benassi with his signature crunchy synths!

Hip-Hop: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis***

2 Nov

As you can see, I have put my typical *** (usually attached to songs) in the title of the post simply because Macklemore and Ryan Lewis make some of the best Hip-Hop I have heard in a long time. Representing the North Western Hip-Hop scene, Macklemore is an MC from Seattle, Washington, with a lyrical talent and flow that ranks amongst some of the best in the business today. Ryan Lewis, Macklemore’s partner in crime, is also a Seattle native who is the producer of the group providing fresh beats. My initial thoughts when I first listened to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were how striking and refreshingly new their sound was. As I kept listening, Macklemore’s story telling abilities and lyrical substance drew me in and left me to reflect on his thoughtful wordplay. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, without a doubt, have something special and something rare in the music industry today that generally seems to be overrun with mediocre “commercial” music. So please do yourself a favor and give Macklemore and Ryan Lewis the respect they deserve!

Indie Rock: Young The Giant, The Holidays

27 Oct

Young The Giant, formerly known as the Jakes, just released their first self-titled album. Although this blog is based primarily in Los Angeles, my hometown is Newport Beach, California, and that just happens to be where Young The Giant wrote their first and latest effort. All five members of the band had gotten together and lived in a house by the ocean. Their “beachy” environment seems to have had great influence on the album in that, “A lot of the ideas on the record spawned from our time there—that concept of eternal summer, of youthfulness,” said Gadhia, the lead vocalist. Their sound definitely resonates with a summer vibe similar to Jack Johnson. These guys definitely deserve a listen! (downloads below video)

Young The Giant- My Body

From a much farther place than Newport Beach from Los Angeles (a 45 minute drive away), a band called, The Holidays, are from a place thousands of miles away: Australia. The land from down under has been putting out some great artists along with The Holidays such as The Temper Trap who have made quite a buzz in the States this past year. The Holidays have been around since 2006, but are only recently gaining international notoriety with their newest release, Post Paradise, which came out last month. Much like Young The Giant, The Holidays have an up-beat summer vibe but with an added tropical twist. I’ve listened to their latest album multiple times through and I have a couple notable songs to share with all of you!

Pretty Lights: Glowing In The Darkest Night EP

23 Oct

Yesterday, Pretty Lights released his third installment, “Glowing In The Darkest Night,” of a trilogy of  EP’s this year. Derek Vincent Smith, who is Pretty Lights, has a very unique style that entails “glitchy hip-hop beats, buzzing synth lines, and vintage funk and soul samples.” He is undoubtedly one of the very best Glitch-Hop artists to ever grace this earth. I’ve included some of the better tracks on his newest EP, but be sure to download the whole thing (FOR FREE) at prettylightsmusic.com.

Pretty Lights- Drift Away ***

Pretty Lights- Out Of Time***

Pretty Lights- Gazing At The Glare***

If you like Pretty Lights, check out the L.A. natives, The Glitch Mob!

The Glitch Mob- Beyond Monday

By the way, if you downloaded the Zeds Dead “Out For Blood” song in the “Bass!” post earlier this week, I updated the link with a better quality version, so I recommend swapping the files!

For The Weekend: Afrojack, Swedish House Mafia

22 Oct

Afrojack has definitely been making his mark on the electronic scene this year. From Bonnaroo to the L.A. Electric Daisy Carnival , he’s been hittin’ people hard with his great production and better sets. The first song, “Bangduck Got It,” is a new bootleg of his own with “Bangduck” and the vocals from an Angger Dimas remix of “She got it” by Vandalism. The original was already awesome, so the vocals on top make it even better! Also, you might have heard one of his newer singles, “Take Over Control,” which an official video just came out for, and you can check out this remix of it that puts a different groovy vibe to it (without the laser gun sounding synths).

Afrojack ft. Eva Simons- Take Over Control (Ian Carey Remix)

Swedish House Mafia seems to never disappoint and this new edit of a Fedde Le Grand track is no exception. I think the title speaks for itself…(Hint: Empire of the Sun- Walking On A Dream/Eurythmics- Sweet Dreams)

Fedde Le Grand- Walking On A Sweet Dream (Swedish House Mafia Edit)

Imogen Heap- Hide & Seek (Otto Knows Remix)***Best Hide & Seek Remix I’ve heard

Also, if you haven’t heard already… Daft Punk made their first appearance in 3 years last night at a Phoenix show at the Madison Square Garden in New York. When I heard this news, naturally, I was overcome with jealousy of all who were lucky enough to be in attendance. Can’t wait for their tour next year!
