Fueled by a vision of success, the main man behind LYfeSTile, David Greenfeld, uses his ambition to propel his career in hip-hop to new heights. A few weeks ago, he released an EP, 4YOURMIND, that is overflowing with excellent tracks. David lays it down smooth with witty and creative lyrics that are presented in a style unique to the LYfeSTile name. The EP features premium progressive hip-hop production that surprisingly draws influences from EDM. If you would like to have a glimpse into the future, listen to LYfeSTile and you won’t be disappointed. Keep an eye out for future posts and grab the EP in it’s entirety here!

Check out the video for “Let It Rise Ft. Leon Ware”! Great to see some West LA action.

Hip-Hop: Theophilus London

10 Nov

Theophilus London is an alternative rap artist from Brooklyn, New York. He has a multidimensional sound that can be described as a melting pot of styles such as soul-pop, post-punk, electronic, and even contemporary R&B. He released his upbeat debut single, “Humdrum Town,” late 2009, and since then he has been an artist on the rise. Today, he just released his second official single “Flying Overseas,” with which he received help from Devonté Hynes and Solange Knowles who are featured on the track. Check him out!

Hip-Hop: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis***

2 Nov

As you can see, I have put my typical *** (usually attached to songs) in the title of the post simply because Macklemore and Ryan Lewis make some of the best Hip-Hop I have heard in a long time. Representing the North Western Hip-Hop scene, Macklemore is an MC from Seattle, Washington, with a lyrical talent and flow that ranks amongst some of the best in the business today. Ryan Lewis, Macklemore’s partner in crime, is also a Seattle native who is the producer of the group providing fresh beats. My initial thoughts when I first listened to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were how striking and refreshingly new their sound was. As I kept listening, Macklemore’s story telling abilities and lyrical substance drew me in and left me to reflect on his thoughtful wordplay. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, without a doubt, have something special and something rare in the music industry today that generally seems to be overrun with mediocre “commercial” music. So please do yourself a favor and give Macklemore and Ryan Lewis the respect they deserve!

Lupe Fiasco & Tinie Tempah

27 Oct

Trying to keep up that music diversity today, I have my 2nd Hip-Hop post ever! Lupe Fiasco is finally getting back on the map since his last release in 2007. Pitchfork describes the Chicago MC as having, “one of the slipperiest flows” to be heard today. With a unique sound compared to all the other not-so-good Hip-Hop out there, Lupe is destined for success coming out with his newest effort, Lasers, in March 2011. This week he released a song off the album, “The Show Goes On,” which samples the old hit, “Float on” by Modest Mouse, used as the base for melody throughout the song. Hopefully this is an accurate representation of how the rest of the album will be!

Lupe Fiasco- We Can Do It Now (Feat. Common & Jennifer Hudson)*Another new release, not sure if it’ll be on the album

Do you know the song, “Miami to Ibiza,” by Swedish House Mafia? If not, a rapper from South London named, Tinie Tempah, is featured in it. That song was where I first heard of this artist, and randomly I came across some of his own music. He reminds me of Bloc Party’s vocalist, Kele, in that they both have an English accent but definitely not vocal style. Tinie Tempah’s English accent adds something a bit different to rap for us in the United States who are not used to it. Nonetheless, it’s cool to hear some foreign rap and what’s not to like with Ellie Goulding singing the chorus?

Just because I have a lot of work to do, which you probably do as well! Special thanks to my friend, Melissa, bringin’ it back. Check out her blog!

Hip-Hop Beats: Kanye, Atmosphere, A-trak

21 Oct

I’m sure you all were just itching for some Hip-Hop after listening to all that pounding techno music, so I decided to bring out some nice beats I came across. Despite the fact that he is representing our whole generation, this recent release “Good Friday” is quite the catchy, feel-good, tune that I’m sure will please the ears of new and veteran Kanye fans alike. Not to mention it features a number if notable artists…

Kanye West ft. Common, Pusha T, KiD CuDi, Big Sean, And Charlie Wilson- Good Friday***

Atmosphere had relatively been laying low since his last LP, “When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold” released in 2008. Last month, he released a combination EP, “To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy: The Atmosphere EP’s”. This song, “The Loser Wins,” is certainly one of the many gems on the EP, and once you get by the first lyrics that will catch you off guard, it moves into the familiar Atmosphere style with a guitar driven beat.

The most recent release of this post is an A-trak song, “Ray Ban Vision”. It’s awesome how A-trak can go from producing Disco House songs like Barbra Streisand in Duck Sauce, alongside Armand Van Helden, to this Hip-Hop song. The lyrics that serve as the focal point of the song, “I got Ray Ban Vision” seem to creep into your brain and stay there for a while (not that it’s a bad thing). I feel this one’s got some potential, listen for yourself!

Since this is my first Hip-Hop post I thought I’d include something different. Here’s a Nike video that was filmed all around LA, but specifically right here in West LA Cnct’s home, Loyola Marymount University (check 0:53-1:08). Also, the song to this video is a classic by a LA native, Ice Cube, and if you don’t have it already, you should. (download link below video)
