Indaba Music: WEST LA CNCT Digital Mixtape #2 Winners

1 Jun

The second round of the Indaba Music WEST LA CNCT Digital Mixtapes wrapped up today! With the continuation of this monthly mixtape, I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of music that seems to be constantly flowing through Indaba Music. If you are looking for great music of several different genres, you will definitely find it. Some of the more bassy submissions made the cut this time around, but there are certainly other great tracks in the genre of prog house and even hip-hop. I want to give a shout out to all of the entrants, and a big congrats to all of the winners! Check out Mixtape #1 if you missed it, and keep an eye out for Mixtape #3!

Lightning In A Bottle 2011

23 May

Los Angeles is home to a plethora of excellent music companies, but The Do LaB is certainly one that stands out amongst the rest. For more than a decade, their creative minds have been providing Southern California with a very unique service: creating an experience as an art form. Driven by a desire to challenge people’s preconceived notions of reality and what is
possible, the countless hours of work and dedication of The Do LaB, has led to the gathering of thousands in celebration of Art, Music, Performance, Sustainability and Life.

The Lightning In A Bottle Festival has found it’s home in the beautiful and inspiring environment of the Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado, CA (an hour South of LA), which is surrounded by rolling hills, lush Oak Trees, and reservoirs. Taking into account all that the festival has to offer in this natural setting is just one of the things that makes it a truly unique experience.

Music and Art are certainly the main attractions of the festival, but The Do LaB wanted to create a more worthwhile and beneficial opportunity for anyone who is willing to take the time to learn through their educational offerings such as speakers and workshops. If you are more musically inclined (as I am), you are set for a very memorable weekend with a vast array of artists including Pretty Lights, Thievery Corporation, MiM0SA, and the Lucent Dossier Experience, to name a few. I’ve also been dying to see some smaller acts such as Gladkill, Stephan Jacobs, and Love & Light.

As for Art, there will be a number of beautiful works ranging from large installations to paintings to crafts from vendors. There will also be a silent auction held for the benefit of The Do LaB’s non-profit organization, The Do ArT Foundation. I can’t wait to explore and discover all of the art featured at the festival!

These next few days will be painstakingly slow, as I am ecstatic to attend my first Lightning In A Bottle with WEST LA CNCT‘s own: Allione and Nathan Podshadley. Since the beginning of the festival over 10 years ago with only 200 attendees, it has definitely come a long way, and I am looking forward to watching it grow and develop further!

I want to wish everyone a safe and incredible weekend, we will see you there!

Check out the set times here and if you want to listen to something to get you ready for the dancing and shenanigans that will take place, the Sex Pixels have just the mix for you. They were the winners of a mix contest which got them an opening slot at the Bamboo stage Friday afternoon. Enjoy!

For more information and updates, check the Lightning In A Bottle website, facebook, and twitter!

Bon Iver- Calgary

16 May

I guess the LA weather hasn’t gotten the memo that its summer yet. Mr. Winter himself, Bon Iver, must have picked up on this, as he has just released his first new material since 2009. The single, “Calgary”, is absolute quality like the rest of Iver‘s work. It channels a mellow, acoustic vibe which serves to display some incredible vocal talent. Relax and enjoy.

Kelsey Wild- In For The Kill (La Roux Cover)

28 Mar

I recently came across this quality cover of “In For The Kill”. Kelsey Wild did a great job with transforming this originally electronic song into more of a singer/songwriter type tune. I posted some heavy stuff today, so I thought I would provide some chill music to ease you into the week!

Folk Music

12 Mar

So, this is a little change of pace here. I get carried away with electronic music sometimes just because the turnover for new material is so fast, but it’s nice listening to some regular music every now and then. The first song, “Little Talks,” reminds me very much of Edward Sharpe or Mumford & Sons, so if you like either of those groups, you will probably like it. The second tune is by Matthew and the Atlas and they actually opened for Mumford for their fall tour. They have a more melancholic type sound but it’s excellent nonetheless! Don’t miss the Bonus, enjoy.

Of Monsters And Men- Little Talks

Matthew and the Atlas- Within the Rose

Baths

8 Feb

I have recently been turned on to the music of Los Angeles based producer Will Wiesenfeld, also known under the moniker Baths. His music is an excellent combination of acoustic instruments and their electronic counterparts. It falls into no genre, yet incorporates the Los Angeles experimental/glitch/open-for-interpretation sound I love so much. Props to my buddy Alan for this discovery!

Baths- Lovely Bloodflow

Baths- Animals

Baths- ♥ (Daedelus’ Snorelaxed Remix)

Yes! New Ziggy! The eldest Marley keeping the family legacy alive with his release of “A Fire Burns For Freedom” for his “Wild and Free” single series.
