Festival Review: Bonnaroo X (Sunday) **Plus Pretty Lights Video**

17 Jun

Sunday at Bonnaroo held some mixed feelings for me.  On one hand I was extremely sad that this magical weekend was coming to an end and trying to figure out if I could still function in ‘normal’ society again.  On the other hand, I was getting pretty tired of waking up with the damned sun and I smelled so badly I don’t think showers wanted me to get in them! But the show must go on…

Highlights for Sunday included legendary Allman Brothers Singer/Organ player Gregg Allman, who did his own take on classic Allman Brothers songs like, “Dreams”, “Blue Sky”, “Mellissa” and a number of his own songs. And speaking of legends how about the mainstage performance by Robert Plant & Band of Joy that I think pretty much blew everyone away!  Being that this was as close to Led Zeppelin as I will ever get, I’ll take it.  I love how Robert Plant is now doing his own take on Country/Bluegrass music.  He has truly mastered both worlds, first of course being British Blues/Rock and now American Country/Bluegrass.  What can’t he do!  Highlights of this for me, however, had to be his take on classic Led Zeppelin tunes like “Houses of the Holy”.  I felt as if I was in the presence of a God. Robert Plant has still got it, and shows no signs of slowing down.

Next I was able to catch some of The Strokes set on the smaller “Which” stage.  I’ve been waiting years to see The Strokes and although I feel their new album is on the weaker side, their performance did not disappoint me one bit. Lead singer Julian Casablancas didn’t seem to be too drunk this show so I think all in all it went smoothly.

Superjam one of Bonnaroo’s strongest traditions was up next.  Superjam is a performance held every year at Bonnaroo consisting of a collaboration of that years top artists.  Past Superjams have included collaborations from Les Claypool, Phil Lesh, Mike Gordon, Trey Anastasio, Kirk Hammett, and many others.  This year was a treat, as we got to see Dan Auerbach, guitarist of the Black Keys, Dr. John keyboardist of The Original Meters, and Patrick Hallahan drummer of My Morning Jacket, along with other musicians notably from The Preservation Hall Jazz Band performing classic New Orleans Funk and Blues  songs.

The Strokes

And finally to close the weekend out Widespread Panic, another six time Bonnaroo veteran band,  played A 2.5 hour set on the main stage. Widespread was a really great closing act for the festival. Their light show was pretty unreal and chaotic which matched well to their guitar shredding rock music.

Unfortunately Bonnaroo is too huge and I couldn’t see everyone I wanted so heres a list of artists I was sad I had to miss:

Florence & The Machine, Ray Lamontagne, !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa, Loretta Lynn, Girl Talk, Gogol Bordello, Railroad Earth, G. Love and the Special Sauce, Explosions in the Sky, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Cold War Kids, Iron and Wine, Bootsy Collins, All of the Comedy Lineup!

All in all it was an UNREAL weekend.  It defiantly took a toll on my sleeping and eating habits, but it was well worth it.  Not only was the music just unforgettable, but it was the other little things like the ferris wheel, clock tower, food trucks, waterslide, mushroom fountain, and just the people and atmosphere that truly make Bonnaroo the magical event it is.  WEST LA CNCT LOVES BONNAROO!  So Superfly, if you are reading this, please hook it up with some press passes next year!

Festival Review: Bonnaroo X (Saturday)

16 Jun

This years 'Arch' donned lights, a disco ball, and a giant hat and feather to celebrate Bonnaroo's 10 years of magic

Saturday at Bonnaroo started out being pretty mellow. Which is a good thing, because going to bed at 5:30 and having the intense sun and heat wake you up at 8:30 really takes a toll on you.  So the WESTLACNCT crew decided to take it easy for a bit and head into Centeroo around 3:30 to see Black Uhuru, an old school Jamaican reggae band, play on the main stage.  I had never heard of Black Uhuru, however Toks rightfully recommended them and I think we all thoroughly enjoyed their performance to jumpstart our day. Afterwards we headed over to That Tent to get a good spot for Portugal The Man, a four piece psychedelic indie-rock band from Portland;  you may know their song “People Say”, from their 2009 studio release, Satanist. Portugal The Man really killed it, they were definitely my favorite small act of the weekend.  Luckily, Portugal The Man has taken notes from their older brothers in the jam band community (something I hope all artists will catch on to) and they now offer free downloads of all their shows on their website (check in a few days for Bonnaroo performance to be up!).

After Portugal The Man we rushed over to catch Mumford and Sons take on a crowd of over 50,000 at the smaller main stage.  It was definitely the biggest crowd the smaller stage had ever seen, but somehow Mumford and Sons still managed to make it feel like an intimate performance. And despite the music being a little quiet, a problem that seemed to carry over to when Buffalo Springfield took the stage,  everyone was still dancing and having a blast! Mumford and Sons were a really tight group, performing songs from their debut album without any hiccups. But what I was really impressed with was the amount of–and great crowd response for–songs off their upcoming album, which they still have yet to hit the studio to make (cross your fingers for a late 2011 release). In the meantime take a listen to “Lover of the Light”, “Broken Crown”, “Below My Feet”, and “Nothing is Written” on youtube if you itching to hear some new Mumford before the album comes out.

Mumford and Sons

After Mumford and Sons we headed to the main stage to see a little band you might know called The Black Keys (If you didn’t catch that joke you should really take a second look at how The Black Keys BLEW UP  this year ever since their album Brothers came out).  I absolutely love The Black Keys stripped down guitar and drum duo.  They brought raw blues back with soo much style, it really makes me proud! Vocalist/guitar player Dan Auerbach’s voice does not disappoint at all live, and his guitar playing is right up there with it.  Him and drummer Patrick Carney make the perfect rock duo, I highly recommend seeing them before they get even bigger!

After the madness that was The Black Keys we stepped into another universe to witness my longtime heros Neil Young and Steven Stills put on a legendary performance with their band Buffalo Springfield. Neil Young had to be the funniest performer of the weekend with hilarious onstage banter like walking out onstage and saying “Hi! We’re from the past!” or waving his arms up at the crowd and mockingly singing “Bonnarooooooooo”.  But I dont want to let the comedy out-stage their amazing performance, because they were truly one of the weekends top acts.  Buffalo Springfield are Gods on that stage, some of the best guitar and vocal work I have ever witnessed!

"Bonarrooooooo"–So much love for Buffalo Springfield

Next on the lineup came a rare late-night performance from the legendary String Cheese Incident.  I have been waiting years to catch a show from the jam band legends after seeing videos of their latest “Winter Carnivals” where shows include acrobats and all sorts of craziness.  So let me tell you straight up, it is almost impossible to describe the madness that went down during The String Cheese Incident. Do I talk about the fat dance party in the crowd while the band flawlessly jammed all types of music in their 3 hour set from bluegrass, to rock, to blues, to salsa, to reggae, to funk, to house and dubstep, and even a choreographed danced rap song!  Or maybe it was their awesome light rig! Or do I talk about in crowd antics like the giant t-rex parade float, or the hundreds of giant blow up balls bouncing around, or the guy flying a jet pack over the crowd, or the jellyfish-man-creature floating and dancing above the crowd suspended by balloons! I just don’t even know! That show was just CRAZY! Sensory overload to say the least! Please check out The String Cheese Incident or their more touring live-dubstep side project EOTO in the near future, they are such talented and creative musicians!

String Cheese Incident

As if the night couldn’t get any better (or weirder) we get out of the String Cheese Incident to see Girl Talk killing it!  However life is about compromises and we weren’t about to miss longtime favorite’s Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) play until the sunrise!  STS9 will always remain one of my favorite bands. Why? Because every time I see them they always seem to be changing their sound around, and they NEVER disappoint.  Sometimes they can sound like a killer rock band, however this time around in the late night tent they were laying into some crazy electronic, bass-heavy psychedelic jams!  They really kill it unlike any other band I’ve seen!  No one can produce that mind blowing live electronic inspired sound that they have!  I highly recommend going to an STS9 show especially if you are near their hometown of Santa Cruz, CA!

So thats it, for now… Sunday’s review will be out very shortly!

I strongly recommend going to Bonnaroo once in your lifetime; it is becoming one of the most unique and strange traditions in America.   You will have the time of your life, guaranteed.  So if you would like to go next year the folks at Superfly have already announced dates and released early bird tickets for 2012 here! So get on it! What are you waiting for!

Festival Review: Bonnaroo X (Thursday and Friday)

15 Jun

If you have been wondering where have all the posts been this past week, WEST LA CNCT has a semi-legitimate excuse for the lack of new music.  The truth of the matter is that we have all been losing our minds at the musical utopia known as Bonnaroo X.

It was hotter than hell.  It was dustier than ever.  We got maybe three hours of sleep every night. But it was the most magical experience of our lives!

Bonnaroo’s 10th birthday party kicked off on a little (700 acre) farm in Manchester, TN.  The party began Thursday night after most of the 80,000+ attendees made it to the festival grounds.  It was a good way to ease into the madness that ensued in the next few days.  We got to enjoy the giant mushroom fountain, ferris wheel, bobble head sculptures, and run around from This Tent to That Tent to The Other Tent without an overwhelming crowd to hold us back.  And of course we got to see some stellar music.   At the top of our music highlights of Thursday night would have to be Sleigh Bells, a noise pop duo hailing from Booklyn, NY, who pretty much blew everyones hipster glasses off with their dance friendly tunes.  Thursday night also included performances by other indie acts Best Coast, Band of Skulls, Deer Hunter,–and to end off the night–Beats Antique.

Friday was the more official kick off to the festival.  As a little day time warm up we saw all types of bands from legends like Bela Fleck & The Original Flecktones, Warren Haynes Band, and Wanda Jackson to rap superstars Atmosphere to Bonnaroo vets Primus and Grace Potter!

Jim James of My Morning Jacket

But the real magic didn’t come until six-time Bonnaroo vets My Morning Jacket played a killer 2 hour set on the main stage followed by another unreal set from Bonnaroo rookies Arcade Fire. My Morning Jacket played some great songs from their new album “Circuital” mixed in with classics like “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2”, “Evil Urges”, “One Big Holiday”, and “Wordless Chorus”–just to name a few–even bringing out special guests from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to accompany them on some tracks. Canadian six-piece band  Arcade Fire blew me away with their amazing talent both instrumentally and vocally and played a great mix of songs from all four of their studio albums. Both sets will forever stick in my memory as some of the greatest performances I’ve ever witnessed.

Up next was the late night acts, and who better to kick off the night than Bassnectar performing inside This Tent from 12:30-2:00.  Obviously word of Bassnectar‘s crazy live sets has gotten out because his crowd reached WAY outside the tent almost all the way past the mushroom fountain.  But that didn’t stop us from getting right in the middle of the action almost front row to get our shit rocked by some unbelievably dirty bass.  If you haven’t seen Bassnectar yet, get on it because he is on FIRE right now. Next came one the harder compromises of the weekend, so we shot over to check out 4-5 songs including crowd favorites like “Loud Pipes” from, my personal heros, Ratatat who were absolutely killing it. Then we went over to the madness that is Shpongle performing on a crazy rig he likes to call the Shpongletron Experience.  And it really was an experience–from on stage dancers, to morphing and melting Shpongle masks, to the unreal ‘third eye’ that had a crazy lazer show coming out of it!  Shpongle thoroughly impressed us all by dropping awesomely mind-melting tracks ranging from deep trance to worldly Indian/Middle-Eastern tracks.  It was quite the experience.  Then to top the night off, when we all thought we couldn’t handle anything else,  we walked over to catch Pretty Lights throw it down with a very impressive light and sound rig until the sun literally rose. What a night!

Shpongletron Experience

Check back soon for a review of Saturday and Sunday, when more magic really kicked in!

Incubus Announces US Tour Dates

2 Jun

In anticipation for their long awaited 8th studio album, Los Angeles natives, Incubus have announced they will once again head out across North America to tour from August- October.  The tour will kick off 8/17 at Red Rocks Amphitheater  in Colorado, where the band recorded their now-legendary “Alive at Red Rocks” CD/DVD in 2004.  From there they will head to 30 different US cities throughout September and end the tour with dates in Los Angeles (Hollywood Bowl) 10/7, Las Vegas 10/8, and San Francisco 10/9.  I am beyond excited for this tour! It has been a few years since I had the pleasure to see Incubus (one of my all time favorite bands) and it is absolutely something you dont want to miss!  So make sure you get your tickets early because my guess is they will sell out most dates. For the full list of dates click here!

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the new single, Adolescence, heres the music video for the track.  The new album is called, If Not Now, When? and it hits stores July 12th.

***Also if you pre-order the album from the Incubus website you will receive a presale code to get tickets before they go on sale to the rest of the public. ***

Coachella 2012 to be Held Over Two Separate Weekends

31 May

This morning Coachella made an announcement about next years festival:

We’re excited to announce Coachella 2012 will be held over TWO WEEKENDS.

In an effort to try and accommodate everyone who wants to experience the festival, COACHELLA 2012 will be two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends. We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people.

We know many of you were unable to attend this year’s festival because passes sold out much sooner than anticipated. We were truly surprised by the overwhelming response and remain honored by your passion and enthusiasm. We also know some of you purchased through non legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com.

Passes go on sale beginning this Friday, June 3rd, 2011, at 10am PST until the following Friday June 10th, 2011, at 10pm PST. This advance sale will be the only opportunity to take advantage of the Coachella Payment Plan. Passes will be available through a payment plan of 10% down and 8 equal monthly payments OR by payment in full. The price of three-day passes remains at $269 plus fees for the sixth consecutive year.

Coachella Weekend 1 – April 13-15, 2012 | Coachella Weekend 2 – April 20-22, 2012

I’m not sure how I feel about this, definitely an interesting concept however, I feel like the festival will lose some of its magic now that it’s trying to be the exact same festival over two weekends.  But it will still rage hard, that’s for sure! What do you think?

Artist Spotlight: EOTO

11 May

EOTO is a two piece electronic band consisting of, members from The String Cheese Indecent,  Michael Travis and Jason Hann. The two started the group in 2006 inspired by their love for electronic music and, more specifically, dubstep.  What they began to create was live, unscripted, 100% improv, dubstep performances that are out of this world.  The phenomenon is known not as dubstep but EOTOstep because it really is something else to see live.  All the tracks are produced on the spot, creating an unbelievable live energy that no DJ can match! Since their collaboration EOTO has played over 200 shows and had an opening spot on Bassnectar’s last tour.

This summer they will be touring shows and festivals all over the country so MAKE SURE YOU DONT MISS THEM highlights include:

Starscape Festival (Baltimore, MD)- June 4th

The Wiltern (Los Angeles, CA)- June 18th

Electric Forest Festival (Rothbury, Michigan) – July 3rd

Show Review: the NEW DEAL 5/7/11

9 May

This past Saturday I got to see one of my favorite bands of all time, the New Deal, play one of their last shows at Terminal 5 in New York City.  If you haven’t heard or seen the New Deal yet, now is your last chance, as they are calling it quits (forever) at the end of this year.

The New Deal describe themselves as “live.progressive.breakbeat.house” and they are exactly that.  The band consists of only three members playing keyboard/synth, bass, and drums. Their shows are always crazy, high-energy dance parties that are pretty much improvisational.  It is truly an experience to see them live!

Here’s a video of their encore, where they played an extended version of one of my favorite songs, “Gone Gone Gone”.

Rumor has it that the band is releasing all of their recent live soundboard recordings via LiveDownloads.com, so check there often for a recording of this crazy show and others like it from this tour!  In the meantime download/listen one of my favorite tapes of the NewDeal Back in 2004 from the Bowery Ballrom in NYC.

I had a lot going on this weekend and I’m definitely feeling a bit burnt out today. I’m in a chill mood, so banging electronic music is taking the back seat on this Sunday afternoon. Thanks to Mike.D making me sit down and listen to a full Phish album, I discovered their excellence and I wanted to share it. This is one of my favorites off of their album The Rift. Enjoy.
